“Mountains are the starting point of my original dream.”—Chi Po-Lin
Tens of millions of years of orogeny have produced lofty and precipitous mountains on this narrow, elongated island, forming obstacles to monsoon airflow and producing ample rainfall that nurtures countless lives inhabiting this island. However, as our economy and development expand towards mountains, we have knowingly or unknowingly deprived mountains of the ability to protect and preserve water and soil and taken away wildlife habitats. When mountains can no longer withstand our actions, the drastic consequences are overwhelming and painful to humans.
Only when we assume a bird’s-eye view could we genuinely see the unimaginable beauty and unbearable sorrow of this island’s mountains, and only then could we truly own up to our actions on this land to retrieve our dream and original intention.
